Trout Tournament Results

April is the tournament that all of the Jocassee Trout anglers look forward to with great anticipation. It is the last Trout tournament of the season and even thought they are competing for lots of money, the ultimate prize is the “wood”, otherwise known as the Jimmie Orr Championship wooden trophy plaque that identifies the winner as the best trout angler of the year. This year Zan Maddox of Rock Hill took the honors with a total of 22.45 points. Anglers receive one point for each tournament that they participate in, points for the exact weight of the fish that they weigh in and points for placing first through fifth place. This year was extremely close with Shannon Burnette coming in second with 21.45 points and bubba Brunson, last years champion taking third with 19.15 points.

The April tournament was a $25 winner take all event. We had 42 anglers for a total cash payout of $640. James Pettil (Union, SC) took cash with a 8.35 pound Brown. Since we did not weigh in any fish in the November winner take all event, all the money from November was rolled into the April pot. Any angler who did not participate in November had the chance to pay the additional entry fee and compete for both pots. James did not fish in November and chose not to pay the additional fee so he did not qualify for both pots. Leon Baker (Matthews, NC) took the November cash with a 6.8 pound Brown.

Carl Leguire (Andrews, NC) won $800 for the overall Big Fish pot with the 11. 25 pound Brown he caught in February. Zan Maddox won second place for a total of $500 and Shannon Burnette took third place and won $300.

The Jocassee Outdoor Center also sponsors a youth championship. All kids under 16 years old can fish for free in any of the tournaments and win prizes for their catch. Just like the Jimmie Orr Championship, there is a Youth Championship with the same point system. This year Ryan Burnette (10) won the championship. Ryan fished in four of the tournaments and caught three fish for a total tally of 24.9 points.

Kids Tournament:

We had one kid sign up for the tournament: Ryan Burnett (10)

  • Ryan caught a 1.10 pound Brown.
  • Ryan won the youth championship with 24.9 points.

  • Zan Maddox won 22.45 points
